History

CKWV first marked on-air on May 24, 1949, as CHUB, on its unique recurrence of 1570 AM with a 250-watt transmitter, with its studio in the Malaspina Hotel on Front Street in downtown Nanaimo; its first program was a communicated of the yearly Empire Day Parade.
To grow its inclusion to encompassing zones, CHUB expanded its capacity to 1000 watts in 1951, with Sun workers Chuck Rudd and Sheila Hassel touching base to deal with the station; among the later staff at the station were night DJ Larry Thomas, morning host Lyall Feltham (in 1956), news chief Pat O’Neill and sports broadcaster Jim Robson.
In 2005, Central Island Broadcasting, mirroring its extended nearness on Vancouver Island with the foundation of Courtenay station CKLR-FM and the securing of CJAV, changed its corporate name to Island Radio.
On November 1, 2005, the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and Island Radio Ltd. reported that Island Radio had consented to sell its six radio stations (counting CKWV, in addition to related resources) to the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group; following CRTC endorsement, Pattison accepted responsibility for Island Radio stations at midnight on June 30, 2006.
